claude memory not working

Is Claude forgetting your instructions or losing track of the conversation? Learn how to fix Claude memory issues in both the chat interface and API.

It is incredibly frustrating when Claude starts ignoring your previous instructions, forgets details you provided earlier in the chat, or loses track of its persona. If you find your claude memory not working as expected, the issue usually stems from context window exhaustion, system prompt overrides, or API configuration errors. Here is how to restore Claude's retention and keep your conversations on track.

Respect the limits of the context window

Claude has an exceptionally large context window, but it is not infinite. As conversations grow longer, older messages are eventually compressed or cycled out to keep processing speeds optimal. If Claude begins to "forget" details from the start of a very long session, the best workaround is to summarise the key facts and start a fresh chat. Starting anew reduces the computational load and prevents the model from getting confused by outdated constraints.

Utilise Project instructions for persistent memory

If you are a Claude Pro or Team user, relying on standard chat memory for long-term rules is inefficient. Instead, use the Projects feature to define persistent instructions and upload reference files. This acts as a permanent memory bank for any chat created within that project. If you are having trouble accessing these features because the interface is unresponsive, check our guide on what to do when the Claude app won't load.

Reinforce rules using system prompts in the API

When developing with the Anthropic API, passing instructions in user messages often leads to Claude forgetting them after a few turns. To fix this, always place your primary rules, behavioural constraints, and memory parameters inside the system prompt parameter rather than the user role. If you experience unexpected disconnects or server errors while trying to call the API, you can troubleshoot using our guide on the Anthropic API 529 overloaded error.

Use XML tags to categorise memory assets

Claude is highly sensitive to structure. If you are feeding complex data or rules that Claude must remember throughout the conversation, wrap them in XML tags (for example, <rules>...</rules> or <context>...</context>). This tells the attention mechanism exactly which parts of the prompt are foundational rules that must be prioritised, reducing the likelihood of Claude hallucinating or disregarding them later in the chat.

Start a new session if the state is corrupted

Sometimes, a single contradictory response from Claude can corrupt the memory of the entire chat thread, as Claude treats its own previous outputs as source truth. If Claude gets stuck in a loop of forgetting or behaving erratically, copying the necessary context and starting a new chat is the fastest resolution. If your chat threads are failing to open or generate responses entirely, read our walkthrough on Claude not responding to get back up and running.
