Claude Giving Short or Unhelpful Replies
Answers suddenly terse or generic? Here is what actually causes it and how to get depth back.

Short answers are rarely a "downgraded model". They are usually context, output limits, or prompt framing.
Your conversation is too long
As a chat approaches the context window, earlier turns are compressed away and quality drops noticeably. Start a fresh chat and paste in only the material that matters.
The response was truncated
If replies stop mid-sentence, you hit the maximum output length. Ask Claude to continue, or request the answer in explicit sections.
Your prompt invites brevity
Claude matches the register of the request. Say how long the answer should be, who it is for, and what format you want: "Give a 600-word explanation with a worked example."
Attachments are consuming the window
Large PDFs and spreadsheets eat most of the available context. Extract the relevant pages before uploading.
Degraded service
During incidents, responses can genuinely become slower and shorter. Check the live status page.
If Claude is not answering at all rather than answering briefly, see Claude not responding. If it is declining the task, read Claude refusing valid requests.
