Claude Refusing Valid Requests? Fix It

False-positive refusals happen when a request pattern-matches something sensitive even though your intent is legitimate.
State your context and purpose
Claude weighs stated context heavily. "I am a nurse writing patient discharge notes" changes the assessment of a medical question far more than repeating the question louder.
Avoid ambiguous phrasing
Words with dual meanings — exploit, attack, crack, kill — trigger caution. Rephrase in the domain terms you actually mean: "penetration testing report for a system I own".
Split the task
A refusal often attaches to one element of a compound request. Break the task into parts and you will find the specific blocker.
Do not try to jailbreak it
Adversarial framings increase refusal rates and can flag your account. Clear, honest framing outperforms every trick.
Fresh chat, clean slate
If a conversation has drifted into a defensive posture, earlier turns keep influencing it. Start again with a well-framed first message.
