claude paste not working

Learn how to fix issues when you cannot paste text, code, or data tables into the Claude.ai chat interface or desktop application.

If you are trying to paste text, code snippets, or logs into the chat window and nothing happens, you are dealing with a common browser or clipboard compatibility issue. This problem typically occurs when browser security policies block clipboard access or when rich text formatting clashes with the input box.

Use these steps to restore copy-and-paste functionality on Claude.ai.

Use keyboard shortcuts instead of right-click

Web-based editors often block custom context menus. If you are trying to right-click with your mouse and select 'Paste' from the dropdown menu, the claude.ai input box may ignore the command. Use standard system keyboard shortcuts instead. On Windows, press Ctrl + V to paste. On macOS, use Cmd + V. This bypasses the browser's context menu overlay and directly interacts with the operating system clipboard.

Clear browser clipboard permissions

Modern browsers restrict websites from accessing your clipboard without explicit consent. If you previously blocked clipboard permissions for Claude, pasting will fail silently. Click the padlock icon on the left side of your browser’s address bar while on claude.ai. Look for 'Clipboard' in the permissions list and toggle it to 'Allow'. Refresh the page and try pasting your text again.

Convert rich text to plain text first

If you are copying text from formatted sources like Microsoft Word, Excel sheets, or PDFs, the hidden formatting metadata can cause the paste action to hang. Try stripping the formatting before pasting. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + V to paste without formatting. On macOS, press Cmd + Option + Shift + V. Alternatively, paste the copied text into a plain text editor like Notepad or TextEdit first, copy it again from there, and paste it into Claude.

Disable conflicting browser extensions

Extensions that manage your clipboard, block scripts, or customise webpage behaviour can interfere with how Claude captures inputs. Ad-blockers, password managers, and text-expansion extensions are common culprits. Open an incognito or private browsing window and log in to Claude. If pasting works in this clean environment, temporarily disable your extensions one by one to identify which utility is blocking the input field.

Reset the application state

Occasionally, the web client's active session becomes corrupted, preventing the text field from registering any inputs. If the entire interface is frozen, you may be experiencing a broader issue where the Claude app won't load. To fix this, log out of your Claude account, clear your browser cache and cookies for the anthropic.com domain, and then log back in to establish a fresh interface state.
