Claude Pro Payment Declined? Do This
Card declined when upgrading to Claude Pro? These are the six most common causes and their fixes.
Updated 8/13/2026
A declined card at the Claude Pro checkout is nearly always a bank-side decision, not an Anthropic block.
1. Bank fraud filters
International digital subscriptions are a common false positive. Call your bank or approve the transaction in your banking app, then retry within a few minutes.
2. 3-D Secure did not complete
If a verification popup was blocked or closed early, the payment fails silently. Allow popups for the checkout page and retry.
3. Billing address mismatch
The address on file must match your card statement exactly, including postcode formatting.
4. Prepaid and virtual cards
Many prepaid cards and some virtual cards reject recurring subscription authorisations. Use a standard credit or debit card.
5. Insufficient available balance
Subscriptions place a temporary authorisation that can exceed the charge amount. Ensure a small buffer is available.
6. Unsupported region
If your billing country is not supported, checkout fails regardless of the card. A VPN will not fix this and can trigger additional fraud checks.
After a successful payment, if Pro features still do not appear, follow Claude billing problems or read our guide to a Claude subscription billing issue.
